DC Jack (Charging Port) Replacement

If your laptop won’t charge, don’t panic — it’s not always a dead battery! A broken or loose DC jack (the barrel-style charging port) is a surprisingly common culprit, and one we fix all the time.

We can diagnose the issue and, in most cases, replace the DC jack same-day or within a couple of days. Our sister company, BCMR, handles USB-C port replacements as well. Prices vary depending on your laptop model and how much disassembly is required, so bring it by and we’ll take a look at no charge — and we’ll give you a clear quote before any work begins.

How Do You Know If It’s the DC Jack or the Battery?

If your laptop won’t charge, the problem is usually one of three things: the battery itself has failed, the charging cable is broken, or the DC jack is damaged. The easiest way to tell is to test with a known-good charger. If a different charger also doesn’t work — or if you have to hold the cable at a specific angle to get any charge — the DC jack is almost certainly the issue.

DC Jack Repair Is Worth Doing

A lot of people assume a laptop that won’t charge needs to be replaced. In most cases it doesn’t — a DC jack replacement is a relatively affordable repair, and it brings the laptop back to full working order. We’ve done hundreds of these at our Durham shop. If the port is loose, wobbly, or making a crackling sound, bring it in.
