Data Transfer & Recovery

Data Transfer

If you’re moving from an old computer to a new one, obviously you want to feel at home. We can copy or transfer your data* from one device to another, in many cases even if the old computer doesn’t boot! On Macs, we can take advantage of the Migration Assistant to copy your settings and applications (unfortunately no such tool exists for Windows). We can also usually move your browser profiles as well, so that your bookmarks and saved passwords persist (this does not work on all browsers.)

*Only data (files and folders – documents, pictures, music, etc.) can be moved between devices. Programs must be reinstalled and settings must be configured by the end user on any new device and cannot be transferred from the old device.

We can also advise on how to keep a backup for the future, in case something goes wrong. Computers and their components fail, so always keep copies of what matters most to you! Backup target drives are inexpensive and available in many sizes.

Data Recovery

If you have a computer that won’t boot or an external hard drive, flash drive, or SSD that won’t mount, let us take a look! Sometimes logical corruptions can be overcome by recovering data on a specially configured system. Some corrupted drives or deleted data may be recoverable with an in-depth data reconstruction scan. Flash drives with broken USB connectors can often be recovered from as well.

We can also identify certain types of electrical or mechanical failures on various media and point you in the direction of reputable, trusted companies that provide forensic-style lab-based recovery.
