If you’ve never used an independent repair shop before, dropping off a laptop you depend on can feel like handing your car keys to a stranger. We get it. Here’s exactly what happens between the moment you walk into our 9th Street location and the moment we call you with a quote — no mystery, no jargon.

Step One: Check-In
When you walk in, we’ll ask three things: what’s wrong, how long it’s been happening, and whether anything specific triggered it. We’ll also ask for a phone number and email so we can reach you with the diagnosis. That’s it — no long forms, no sales pitch. Your machine gets a tag with a unique number, and that number is how we track it through the shop.
Step Two: Diagnosis
This is the most important part, and it’s where a lot of shops cut corners. We don’t. Before we quote a single repair, we figure out what’s actually wrong. That can mean running hardware diagnostics on the storage drive and memory, watching for thermal issues under load, checking the battery’s health, looking for malware, or testing the power system. Sometimes the original complaint (“it’s slow”) turns out to be a different problem entirely (“the hard drive is failing”).
Most diagnoses are completed within 24 hours of check-in. Complex problems can take longer, but you’ll hear from us either way.
Step Three: The Quote
Once we know what’s wrong, we call you with a clear price and a recommendation. We’ll tell you what we’d do if it were our own machine. If we think the repair isn’t worth it — say, the cost is too close to what a replacement would run — we’ll say that too. Nothing happens until you say go.
Step Four: The Repair
If you approve the work and we have parts on hand, most repairs are done within 24 hours of check-in. If we need to order a part, we’ll let you know — most parts arrive in one to three business days. We don’t offer paid prioritization. Every job is important, and they go in the order they come in.
Step Five: The Pickup
We’ll call or email when your machine is ready. Come by during shop hours, pay for the work, and head out. If we made any changes you should know about — new login behavior, a different drive, updated software — we’ll explain them on the spot.
What We Don’t Do
A few things worth saying out loud: we don’t snoop through your files. We don’t try to sell you services you don’t need. We don’t pressure you into upgrades. And we don’t quote a repair we can’t actually deliver — if something’s outside our scope, we’ll tell you and point you to someone who can help.
Walk In Anytime
We’re in the lower level of The Regulator on 9th Street, open Monday through Friday. No appointment needed for drop-off — just come on by. Questions before you bring your machine in? Call us at (919) 314-3327 and we’ll talk it through.
