“My laptop won’t charge” is one of the most common complaints we hear. The frustrating part is that the same symptom can come from three completely different culprits — and one of them is a five-dollar fix while another is a board-level repair.

Before you assume the worst, here’s how we narrow it down.
The four suspects
When a laptop refuses to charge, the cause is almost always one of these:
- The wall outlet or power strip
- The charger brick or cable
- The DC jack (where the cable plugs into the laptop)
- The battery itself
USB-C laptops add a fifth: the USB-C port and its associated controller chip.
Start with the easy stuff
It sounds dumb, but try a different outlet. Power strips fail. Outlets get loose. We’ve had multiple customers come in convinced their laptop was dead, only to find out the GFCI outlet in their kitchen had tripped.
Next, inspect the charger cable end-to-end. Look for kinks, bare wires, scorched plastic, or pins that look bent or recessed. Wiggle the cable while it’s plugged in — if the charging light flickers when you move it, the cable is the problem. Charger cables are consumables. They wear out, especially the thin section near the tip that gets bent every time you stuff the laptop in a bag.
Test the charger separately
If you have a multimeter, you can measure the voltage at the tip — but most people don’t. Easier: borrow a known-good charger from a friend with the same brand of laptop. Or bring the charger into our shop and we’ll test it on our bench in about thirty seconds. Free.
If the charger tests good, the problem is on the laptop side.
Battery vs. DC jack: how to tell them apart
This is the question that determines whether you’re looking at a $80 fix or a $200 fix. Here’s the trick:
Plug the charger in and turn the laptop on while it’s plugged in. Then click the battery icon in your taskbar (or system menu on a Mac).
- If it says “Plugged in, charging” — the system is charging fine. Your battery may just be old.
- If it says “Plugged in, not charging” — the laptop sees power, but the battery isn’t taking it. That points to the battery.
- If it says “On battery” or “Not plugged in” while the charger is physically connected — the laptop isn’t seeing the charger. That points to the DC jack or charging circuit.
- If you wiggle the charging cable where it meets the laptop and the status flickers — that’s almost always the DC jack working its way loose. Common on laptops 3+ years old, especially ones that get carried around.
Battery health: check it before you replace it
Both Windows and macOS will tell you the health of your battery. On Windows, open a Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. Open the HTML file it generates. Compare “Design Capacity” to “Full Charge Capacity.” If you’re under 60% of the original, the battery is end-of-life and replacement is reasonable.
On a Mac, hold Option and click the Apple menu, then choose System Information → Power. Look at “Cycle Count” and “Condition.” If the condition says “Service Recommended,” the battery is done.
USB-C laptops: the new wrinkle
USB-C charging adds new failure modes. The port itself can fill with lint (use a wooden toothpick to clear it — gently). The cable can fail. The PD chip on the motherboard can fail. And not all USB-C cables actually deliver enough power; a phone charging cable will not charge a laptop. Make sure you’re using a cable rated for laptop power, ideally the original.
What we’d do at the shop
When someone walks in with a charging issue, we test the charger first (instant), check the battery health (a couple of minutes), then physically inspect the DC jack. Most charging diagnostics are completed within 24 hours of check-in, and we’ll quote you the fix before doing any work.
