An overheating computer is not just uncomfortable — it’s the leading cause of premature hardware failure we see at the shop. Heat kills electronics. The good news is that overheating is almost always fixable, and the fix is often surprisingly simple.

How to know it’s actually overheating (and not something else)

Overheating tends to come with a recognizable set of symptoms:

  • Fan spins at maximum constantly, even at idle
  • Bottom of the laptop or area above the keyboard becomes painfully hot
  • Performance gets sluggish, especially during demanding tasks
  • Programs randomly close, or the whole machine shuts off without warning
  • Fan noise changes from a steady hum to a high-pitched whine

If you want a hard number, install a free monitoring tool like HWiNFO (Windows) or check Activity Monitor’s energy tab on a Mac. Sustained CPU temperatures above 90°C under normal use are a problem. Above 95°C and your computer is one heat spike away from a thermal shutdown.

The number-one cause: dust

The vast majority of overheating laptops we open are choked with dust. The cooling system in a modern laptop is a small fan blowing air across a thin stack of metal fins. When those fins clog with lint, pet hair, and household dust, no amount of fan speed moves enough air to keep up. The CPU goes from 70°C to 95°C in a matter of minutes, and the fan tries to compensate by running flat-out.

This isn’t a flaw — it’s just physics. Every laptop needs to be cleaned eventually. How often depends on your environment: if you have pets, smoke nearby, or work on a bed or carpet, every 12 to 18 months. In a clean office, every two to three years.

A proper cleaning means opening the laptop, removing the heatsink, blowing the fins clear, and ideally replacing the thermal paste between the heatsink and the chips. Compressed-air-from-the-vents alone usually doesn’t cut it once dust is well-packed.

The number-two cause: dried-out thermal paste

Thermal paste is the gray gunk between the CPU and the heatsink. It fills microscopic gaps so heat can transfer efficiently. Over four to six years, it dries out and cracks. Once that happens, the heatsink can’t pull heat off the chip fast enough, and temperatures climb even with a perfectly clean cooling system.

Replacing thermal paste is cheap (the paste itself is a few dollars) but requires opening the laptop. We do it as a matter of course on most cleaning jobs — there’s no reason not to while we’re already in there.

Other heat traps

Where you use it. Beds, blankets, couches, and laps block the air intake. Use a hard surface — a desk, a tray, a lap desk. Even a hardcover book is better than a comforter.

Background software. Cryptominer malware, runaway browser tabs, and certain anti-virus products can pin the CPU at 100% and produce real heat. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) or Activity Monitor and see what’s eating your CPU.

Failed fan. If the fan has actually died — bearings worn out, blade jammed — you’ll get heat with no fan noise at all. Fan replacements are usually inexpensive parts. We keep some common desktop fans on hand; for laptops we typically order the exact fan once we’ve identified the model, then swap it in when it arrives.

Ambient temperature. An office hovering around 80°F adds real load on the cooling system. We see a clear uptick in overheating cases every July and August in Durham.

Desktops aren’t immune

Desktops have more thermal headroom but the same failure modes. Dust accumulates in the radiator and case fans, thermal paste dries out on the CPU and GPU, and case airflow can get blocked when a tower lives under a desk against a wall. Pull the side panel off and look. If you see a quarter inch of fuzz on every fan blade, that’s your culprit.

What we do at the shop

A typical laptop physical cleaning at our shop takes about an hour of bench time. We open it, remove the keyboard or bottom panel, clear the fan and heatsink, replace the thermal paste, reassemble, and stress-test the temperatures before handing it back. Most cleanings get the same machine running 20–30 degrees Celsius cooler under load.
