USB ports failing is one of those problems that looks worse than it usually is. People assume the port is physically broken, but more often than not the issue is software, power, or the device they’re plugging in. Here’s the order we work through it at the shop.

Step one: try a different device
Before blaming the port, plug something else in. If your flash drive doesn’t work but your phone charging cable does, the flash drive is the problem. If your phone doesn’t charge but a USB mouse lights up, the cable or phone is the problem.
USB ports do different things — they provide power and data — and a port can fail at one without failing at the other. A port that won’t read a flash drive but charges a phone is still partially alive.
Step two: try every port
Most laptops have two to four USB ports, and they don’t all share the same controller. Try the device in every port. If only one port is dead, that’s a much narrower problem than all of them being out.
If all USB ports are dead at once, the issue is almost certainly software, the USB controller, or a driver — not physical damage to every port.
Step three: a clean reboot
Restart the laptop completely. Don’t just close the lid — actually shut down and restart. Windows in particular can lose track of USB state, and a fresh boot resets all the controllers. We see USB ports come back to life from this trick constantly.
While you’re at it, do a hard reset: shut down, unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds, plug back in, boot up. Drains residual charge from capacitors and gives the embedded controller a fresh start.
Step four: check Device Manager (Windows)
On Windows, right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager. Look for a section called “Universal Serial Bus controllers.” Expand it. If you see any items with a yellow exclamation mark, that’s a driver problem. Right-click each one and choose “Uninstall device” — don’t worry, Windows will reinstall them on the next reboot. Then restart.
Also check the “USB Hub” entries. Right-click each one, choose Properties, go to the Power Management tab, and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Windows aggressively powers down USB controllers to save battery, and sometimes they don’t wake back up.
Step five: physical inspection
Look inside each USB port with a flashlight. Lint, pet hair, and pocket fuzz collect in there over time and can prevent good contact. Use a wooden toothpick to gently clear debris — never metal. If a port has bent pins or feels loose when you wiggle a connector in it, that’s physical damage and likely needs replacement.
Common signs of a damaged port:
- The connector wiggles freely up and down or side to side when plugged in
- The port itself looks recessed into the laptop body
- You see scorching or discoloration around the port
- You can see debris stuck inside that won’t come out with a toothpick
Step six: rule out the device
Test the same USB device on a different computer. If your flash drive doesn’t work on either machine, the drive is dead. We see this constantly — people bring laptops in for “broken USB” and it turns out their flash drive failed.
Same goes for cables. Charging cables especially have a finite lifespan. The thin part near the USB-A connector wears out, and the cable will sometimes look fine but no longer carry data or full power.
USB-C is its own animal
USB-C ports add complications. They handle charging, video output, and data, and any of those can fail independently. A USB-C port that charges fine but won’t drive an external display might have a working power circuit and a failed USB controller. We see this on aging ultrabooks regularly.
USB-C cables also vary wildly in capability. A cable that came with a phone may not carry video, and a cheap cable may not deliver enough power for a laptop. Always test with the cable that originally came with your device when possible.
When replacement makes sense
If a USB port is physically damaged — broken pins, loose mount, or scorched — it usually needs to be replaced. On most laptops the port is soldered to the motherboard or to a small daughter board. Daughter board replacements are usually quick and inexpensive. Motherboard-level repairs are more involved and we’ll always tell you whether the cost makes sense relative to the laptop’s value.
