5 Signs Your Laptop Battery Needs to Be Replaced

If you use a laptop, your battery is one of the most important — and most overlooked — parts of your machine. Most laptop batteries are designed to last around 2–4 years, or roughly 300–500 full charge cycles. After that, you may start noticing some frustrating symptoms. Here are five signs it’s time to bring your laptop in for a battery replacement.

1. Your Laptop Dies Way Faster Than It Used To

This is the most obvious sign. If your laptop used to last 6–8 hours on a charge and now barely makes it through a 90-minute meeting, the battery has lost significant capacity. Over time, all rechargeable batteries hold less and less charge — that’s just chemistry. The good news is that a replacement battery can bring your laptop back to near-original runtime.

2. Your Laptop Only Works When Plugged In

If your laptop shuts off immediately when you unplug it — or won’t turn on at all without the charger — the battery may have failed completely. This is more than just low capacity; it usually means the battery cells have given up entirely. At this point, you’re essentially using a very expensive, very heavy desktop computer.

3. The Battery Percentage Jumps Around Randomly

If you notice your battery reading 47% one minute and then 12% the next — without any significant use — that’s a strong sign the battery is failing. A healthy battery reports its charge level consistently. Erratic readings mean the battery’s internal sensors are no longer reliable, which can also cause unexpected shutdowns.

4. Your Laptop Feels Unusually Hot Near the Bottom

Heat is a symptom AND a cause of battery degradation. A failing battery works harder to deliver power, which generates more heat. If you notice your laptop running much hotter than normal — especially near the battery area — it’s worth getting it checked out. In some cases, a failing battery can swell, which can damage other components if left unchecked.

5. Windows or macOS Is Warning You About the Battery

Both Windows and macOS have built-in battery health monitoring. Windows may show a red “X” or a warning saying “Consider replacing your battery.” On a Mac, you can check by holding Option and clicking the battery icon — if it says “Service Recommended” or “Service Battery,” that’s the operating system telling you it’s time. Don’t ignore these warnings.
